14:52Building Stablecoin Payments at Scale | Justin Gainsley (Coinbase) at ETHConf
ETHGlobalJul 9, 2026
In this talk, Justin Gainsley, who leads stablecoin payment acceptance at Coinbase, shares what four years of building stablecoin payments at scale has taught him about selling to enterprises and payment service providers, and what still needs to be accomplished. He opens with a 2012 Hacker News post from Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong, written before he even applied to Y Combinator, expressing the idea of using crypto to remove the 2 to 3% interchange tax Visa and Mastercard charge on every payment, showing crypto as a payment method has been ingrained in Coinbase from the start. Taking over Coinbase Commerce with the same mandate, Justin's team tried nearly everything (Bitcoin payments, every token on every chain, memecoins, cashback, point of sale, invoicing, online checkout) but nothing moved the needle, and for a while they worried crypto might not be right for payments. The signal emerged from talking to hundreds of buyers and merchants: a real cohort wanted crypto as their cash, something stable to earn into and spend without gas or volatility. So Coinbase made the non-consensus bet of stripping out Bitcoin, Ethereum, and all volatile assets to go all in on stablecoins, which drew internal backlash but sent conversion, volume, and merchant satisfaction all up. Strikingly, 64% of wallets paying on the stablecoin only product held no other assets, a fundamentally new cohort of savers rather than traders. Justin recounts bringing what they thought was the industry's best stablecoin checkout to Shopify, only to be asked about auth and capture, a term he had never heard, kicking off a year of learning what a real payment system requires: authorization holds, automated voids, configurable expiries, refunds, settlement schemes, reconciliation, and disputes. He details the resulting open source Commerce Payments Protocol, an escrow smart contract on Base powering Shopify's USDC checkout across hundreds of thousands of sites, with a permissionless operator role, six operations (authorize, capture, charge, void, refund, reclaim), and a blockchain native reclaim function letting buyers pull funds back after expiry. He covers the boring but required enterprise needs (predictable flat gas fees, custom settlement files, daily fiat delivery, compliance), argues the blockchain itself is fine for payments since Base settles in 200 milliseconds for under a penny, and identifies wallets, on-ramps, and signing UX as the real problems. He closes noting stablecoin payments have gone from curiosity to production in two years. 00:00 Introduction 00:41 Brian Armstrong's 2012 Post on Removing Interchange 01:09 Why Crypto Payments Are in Coinbase's DNA 01:35 Trying Everything to Make Crypto Payments Work 02:00 Worrying Crypto Might Not Fit Payments 02:23 Listening Closely to Buyers and Merchants 02:41 The Camp That Wanted Crypto as Cash 03:06 The Non-Consensus Bet on Stablecoins 03:35 The Internal Backlash 03:58 Why All the Metrics Went Up 04:28 64% of Wallets Held No Other Assets 04:54 The New Cohort of Savers 05:14 Bringing the Best Checkout to Shopify 05:32 The Auth and Capture Question 06:08 A Year Learning What Payments Require 06:32 Why Not to Underestimate Traditional Payments 07:15 Plugging Into Where Enterprises Already Are 07:37 The Commerce Payments Protocol on Base 08:01 How the Escrow Smart Contract Works 08:28 The Operator Role Explained 08:46 Why Operators Cannot Modify or Lock Funds 09:28 The Six Core Operations 09:48 Reclaim as a Blockchain Native Feature 10:12 The Boring but Required Enterprise Needs 10:33 Predictable Flat Gas Fees 10:44 Custom Settlement Files per PSP 11:01 Daily Fiat Delivery and Compliance 11:26 Just Another Alternative Payment Method 11:54 What the Industry Still Needs 12:19 Why the Blockchain Is Fine for Payments 12:42 Where Wallet UX Kills Conversion 13:03 Why On-Ramps Still Need to Be Better 13:27 Signing UX and Smart Wallet Adoption 13:59 From Curiosity to Production in Two Years 14:41 Closing _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *ETHConf 2026* ETHConf is a 3 day event for founders, industry leaders, and builders who are excited about the possibilities of building on top of Ethereum. 09:32The Perpification of Everything | Kaledora Kiernan Linn (Ostium) at ETHConf
ETHGlobalJul 9, 2026
In this talk, Kaledora Kiernan Linn from Ostium discusses postmodern investing and the rise of what she terms perpification, the transformation of assets into perpetuals and the proliferation thereof. She frames the core macro thesis behind Ostium: macro news is the new reality TV. When they started the company a few years ago this was a contrarian view, but her conviction was that markets had entered a new macro paradigm. She argues the first generation of consumer trading applications, in the interim period between the 2008 great financial crisis and COVID in 2020, was a historical anomaly defined by three things: extremely low, zero-bound interest rates, extremely low inflation, and little geopolitical uncertainty. COVID broke that mold and thrust markets into the opposite: persistently higher and more unpredictable rate policy (swinging from three anticipated cuts to expected hikes), inflation that was transitory then came back, and pervasive geopolitical uncertainty. Kaledora argues this ushers in a new generation of traders, illustrated by loud, active Twitter accounts like one that made over $4 million trading oil during the Strait of Hormuz closure and another that single-shotted large gold and oil positions for over half a million dollars of P&L in under a day. She calls the underlying trend Revenge of the Hyper Online (a nod to Revenge of the Nerds), arguing that time spent from a young age in chats, trading groups, and subreddits is unexpectedly value-creative, honing two contrarian skills: identifying reflexive viral loops (sensing what the herd will focus on, honed in the meme coin trenches) and a theory of mind for unpredictable characters (intuiting what an erratic geopolitical actor might do, much like anticipating a meme coin dev). She explains what this means for the market: asset-class-specific trading is collapsing, and where the prior mobile-first generation siloed people into FX, stock, or crypto traders, the trader of today moves seamlessly between gold, Bitcoin, oil, Nvidia, and the next SpaceX IPO, agnostic to asset class and chasing momentum. This drives migration to a single platform and a single instrument, the perpetual, which turns any asset into a cash-settled, risk-modulated instrument that never expires, the perfect native tool for this style. She closes noting Ostium and others have grown tremendously, and that this new class of cross-asset macro trader has elevated perps from a niche crypto instrument into one the broader finance world now takes seriously. 00:00 Introduction 00:07 Postmodern Investing and Perpification 00:37 Why We Started the Company 00:47 Macro News Is the New Reality TV 00:58 The New Macro Paradigm 01:27 The Three Anomalies of the Old World 01:48 How COVID Broke the Mold 02:10 Higher Rates, Inflation, and Geopolitical Uncertainty 02:30 A New Generation of Traders 02:37 The Oil Trader Who Made $4 Million 02:56 Single-Shotting Gold and Oil for Half a Million 03:23 Revenge of the Hyper Online 04:02 Skill One: Identifying Reflexive Viral Loops 04:28 Skill Two: A Theory of Mind for Unpredictable Characters 05:21 The Thanksgiving Markets Meme 05:34 Why Asset-Class-Specific Trading Is Collapsing 05:49 The Siloed First Generation of Trading Apps 06:11 The Trader Who Moves Seamlessly Between Assets 06:38 The Rise of a Single Instrument and Platform 07:10 Migrating to One Platform Across Asset Classes 07:35 Why People Just Want to Long or Short Anything 08:00 What Perpification Really Means 08:25 Why the Market Has Validated Perps 08:56 The New Archetype of Cross-Asset Macro Trader 09:27 Closing _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *ETHConf 2026* ETHConf is a 3 day event for founders, industry leaders, and builders who are excited about the possibilities of building on top of Ethereum. Introduction
Conflux - Web3 UX UnconferenceNov 16, 2023
No description The video features an opening speech from a conference in Istanbul addressing the UX community. Despite regional challenges and the absence of some colleagues, the speaker appreciates attendees' presence at DevConnect and encourages them to enjoy the additional activities available, including Turkish ice cream and coffee. The speech explains that the UXLand conference is an "un-conference," where participants create the event by discussing topics of interest to them. The conference has no sponsors or volunteers but is supported by the Ethereum Foundation and DevConnect. The speaker emphasizes that the success of the event depends on attendee participation and stresses that it's a collaborative environment rather than a platform for promoting individual projects. Attendees represent various professional backgrounds, with product development, engineering, and design being prominent. Key topics for discussion include account extraction, user onboarding, Web3 design principles, and general adoption within the ecosystem. Working groups will form to delve deeper into these areas in a collaborative setting with provided tools like FigJam for documentation. The speaker also mentions a goal of creating memorable ways (memes) to communicate complex UX concepts outside of the conference to foster broader understanding and excitement. An example given is "4337," which has gained attention despite many not fully understanding it. The video outlines rules for speakers, including strict time limits,
