0xj4an - Virtual State Blockchains on Ethereum
ETHCluj Meetup·Thu, Jul 9, 2026, 12:00 AM
Ethereum has scaled horizontally through rollups, but many applications still need more flexible execution patterns. This talk introduces virtual state blockchains: chain-like environments deployed in Solidity, with isolated state, async nonces, executors, zkVaults, FHE confidentiallity and abstracted UX, offering a practical way to experiment with new execution models without new infra.

Okay, hello everyone.
[clears throat]
My name is Juan. I'm going to talk about Ethereum virtual blockchain machines. Like a new idea. You can have virtual blockchains in Ethereum or in any layer two. So, just for context, uh I work for Celo, a layer two.
I'm part of the governance team. I also build communities for Celo. I have also been working in the Refi space in Colombia, but this time I'm I'm here as a EVBM ambassador. It's a project of some friends and I like uh from Mexico. They deployed They started the project this project in uh Denver like 3 years ago.
And so, today I'm going to show you why virtual blockchains uh over EVM blockchains and what are the problems that we are solving with this with this new technology. So, first of all, we have we have like a lot of problems actually that needs to be solved in in Ethereum the mainnet like Ethereum mainnet or any other layer two. We have a We have a lot of problems to solve with compliance, with token incompatibilities. For example, for the X402 payments, you need to you need to wrap the tokens. We have like so many complex solutions for privacy.
We are also We have also post-quantum resistance problem. And the gas and abstraction, you need like a lot of tools to make this happen. And the multi-chain composability the liquidity like a spread across the like so many different chains and you need a lot of bridges and stuff to solve this. So, there is another option and that is that is the option that we want to bring to to the public like there is another option to solve this this problem. These problems are going to take long time to be solved it in in in the blockchains because they need to to make like some upgrades to the core contracts of the blockchain and if you want to avoid this, you can you can have like another another option.
So, EVBM solves all these problems. With EVBM, you can have gasless UX, you can have a contract structure, you can have full composability, you can have CK CK included in the in the in the new virtual blockchain. When you deploy the virtual blockchain, you can have native payments X facility to payments. And you can also have like a sync nodes like the the nodes the the possibility to have a sync nodes and parallel execution of transaction is something that it was not it was not able to happen before and now like 2 weeks ago in the Ethereum magician blockchain, there is a an AP being disclosed to make KNOWN in in Ethereum. And this is going to take like a long time to be disclosed, to be proposed, to be implemented.
And with EVBM, we we can have a sync nodes like 2 years ago. So, if you want to take a look at the at the proposal, I'll our comment, we also leave a comment in the proposal explaining how you can use EVM for the async nodes. You you can scan the QR code and you can go to to the forum and take a look at the at the whole proposal they posted and take a look at our answer we give them and you can also like take part of the conversation that is happening there. So, what what is actually like EVM? EVM is just like a set of contracts that you deploy in our auction.
You can deploy uh like this set of contracts in Ethereum, in base, in Celo, in any any blockchain that you want to deploy. And you deploy when you deploy this set of contracts, you deploy like a new environment. You deploy you configure how the things are going to happen. So, you can put your own rules. So, if you um Let Let me go to the next one because this This is better the the best way to explain.
Like, imagine you're a bank and you want to you want to have like a whole environment to be able to do to do transactions fully compliance with K with KYC and you want users to pay gas. So, for that, you have you have to do a lot of things. You have to do a lot of things in the in the UX part. You have to deploy a lot of contracts. And for you to be able to do this in a new chain, so you will need to build a new chain and launch a new chain.
You need to have You need to have validators. You need to have um you need to deploy a lot of contracts. You need to pay a lot of a lot of money in audits and all these kind of things. Instead of building a new chain, you can just deploy a virtual chain. And when you deploy the virtual chain, you put your rules.
So, for example, a bank can deploy a virtual blockchain and the bank can can say like, "Okay, every every address that is going to is going to be created in this in this virtual environment need needs to be needs to go through a KYC process before. And every transaction here is going to be gasless. You can put all your all your rules in the in the in the in the in the in the set of contracts when you deploy the Ethereum virtual blockchain and then when you set this environment any DApp built inside this environment um uh takes takes the rules of the virtual blockchain. So, what is different between deploying a virtual blockchain machine or deploying a smart contract? A smart contract put the rules for one app.
A virtual blockchain machine put the rules for the whole environment. So, um that's what I already said to you like instead of deploying a a new L1, L2, or L3, you can just deploy the EVBM. So, you don't need validators, you don't need to run nodes. You don't need to you're not going to take 12 months, 1 year to deploy a new blockchain. It's not going to cost you that too much.
You you don't need to you're not going to need to do like a a lot of maintenance to the to the contracts, a lot of audits, and all these kind of thing. You always need gas in a new blockchain. In a virtual environment, you can escape the gas. You can abstract abstract the gas. So, instead of launching new blockchains, you can just launch a virtual blockchains.
And you are going to benefit you are going to benefit and you are going to inherit all the all the all the audits, all the security from the chain that where where you deploy the the EVBM. So, in 2026, this is the the progress we have been made. Um we have been testing with a lot of a lot of developer. They have been deploying some virtually BBMs. They have been experimenting like putting their own rules and just kind of testing how it can works and finding some use cases.
So we have deployed in base in Arbitrum in Monad. I don't know how this point Okay, in Monad in Astar in Sepolia in base Sepolia in BNB etc. Um Yeah, that that is [clears throat] that is like basically the idea of EVBM. Uh you can do EVBM for you can have like bank EVBM KYC EVBM a a virtual virtual machine for agents for jail for whatever. I mean you can use it you can use put your rules and create the EVBM that you want to have.
Um this is our this is the QR for the for the Telegram uh you can you can go there. You can check the GitHub repo. You can take a look at the documentation and you can also deploy a EVBM um just you can deploy a EVBM using 1 minute. You just it's just like two three uh um CLI commands and you put some rules and you deploy a EVBM and from that you can start like configuring the the rules of the virtual virtual machine and all these kind of things.
