DevconThu, Oct 9, 2025, 12:00 AM

This talk will explore the concept of privacy-preserving groups and the challenges associated with managing them. It will cover different ideas to add anti-sybil mechanisms to enhance group security and trust. The presentation will also highlight real-world projects working on it and provide practical use cases to illustrate their application and impact. [Music] [Music] hello everyone my name is Vian Placencia and I'm a Sor in the privacy and scaling expirations team at the theum foundation and today I will be talking about privacy preserving groups privacy preserving groups are groups H where the identity H or the actions of the members is private there are a lot of use cases for this type of groups and one of them is everything related to Anonymous interactions like Anonymous feedback Anonymous voting there is also an interesting use case related to Pro H to proof that you own a credential so there are a lot of credentials that take time to H prove and verify so something that you can do is to H ask people to verify the credential ones and then add them to a group and then they can just every time they want to prove the credential they just have to prove that they are member of that group and that's a cool use case of this type of groups because you can keep privacy H we cannot talk about groups without talking about anti-il mechanisms so there are a lot of ways to use anti-il mechanisms for your groups and an anti-il mechanism is a method to prevent fake or duplicate identities in your group and something interesting that you can do for to have a stronger anti-il mechanism is to combine a many anti civil mechanisms using logical operators so that is you have like a stronger anti for your for your group there are a lot of examples of anti- civil mechanisms so one of I will mention a a few one of them can be like invite codes you can send people an invite code and they can join a group and another can be like social media information like GitHub followers or personal stars and also a spec number of comics on a specific repository also Twitter followers H or if you follow a specific user those can be anti-il mechanisms uh from web too and there are also anti-il mechanism that we can get from blockchain information like your account balance the number of transactions and the identity Protocols are also a nice way to have anti-il mechanisms for your groups example of this is a an anatar and also open passport there are a lot of other protocols that are really cool H anti-il mechanism like eation service not and pop so some projects can be can work can be useful for privacy preserving groups and also for anti-il mechanisms one one of these is semaphor H this is for groups Anonymous interaction but it's really useful for if you are part of a group then you can be added to another group just if you are part of another different group so also supas which is a project that we are using here it has groups and also can be used as an anti civil mechanism and bandala which is an infrastructure to manage privacy preserving groups and it also have a lot of credentials and and C kit which is a a set of libraries and and algorithms so that's also has groups and can be used for anti to so the three main ideas H from this presentation that I would like you to remember are like privacy preser groups can be used H to verify credentials H to have a better user experience in your applications also that you can combine different anti-il mechanisms to have a stronger one H that's very important is maybe it's not your case but H for your application but it can be the case for some other applications and some projects can also H be used as anti civil mechanism they were not created for that but they are really useful as an anti civil mechanism so that's the third point so thank you very much and yeah I will be around feel free to ask me any questions about these topics thank you thank you Vivian we have some time for questions hi hi Vivan I've used bandana before um I I just find it difficult to understand like uh this works in with IDs right uh you get a group ID and a users ID so how do I use these group IDs or or what what happens after I get one of these groups set up yes H bandal is compatible with semop for so you can use the SEMA for identity package uh to have the SEMA for identities and you can add this the commitment to bandal group and then you can work with that group and it's also since it's compatible with semaphor you can do Anonymous H things with yeah the members in your group any other questions is over there I see some people wearing the mirr cat hat but unfortunately we're doing the rolling the ball of throwing yeah please so quick question so are there any like practical way to forcefully remove someone from a group so I understand that like it's kind of easy to verify someone and try to add a group right but I mean as the group C run and that might be a reason to remove someone forcefully are there any practical way to do that yeah yeah H there is a if you want to do it with code there are functions for that if you want to use it if in case of H application for example bandala you can use do it directly the dashboard yeah there is a way an easy way if you are using Code or not yeah uh can you explain the mechanic behind like how can you like maintain privacy everyone and also kind of can specifically remove someone yeah h in the group you will have identity commitments which is like the it's like a public key like a your account that is public and you you have a private value so the commitment can be public and commitment are not attached to to to the identity of the real person so so H you can I mean the the person it's a commitment so people don't know like who is that commitment okay thank you do we have other questions for V there's one question here um a lot of these privacy groups are opt-in privacy group uh privacy groups is there any opt out privacy groups as well that you guys have looked into that you mean like if you can be you can if you want to be out of the group you can do it oh yeah like by default everybody yeah there is an admin and the admin can remove people so yeah I don't
