Speaker

In this interview, Amir Taaki (DarkFi) presents privacy as a tool to expand freedom and reshape society, not just protect against surveillance. He frames cypherpunks as builders of peer-to-peer systems and stresses the importance of controlling the technology we rely on. For Taaki, privacy is not a lifestyle, it’s a tactic for building new systems and a different future. Hi, my name's [music] Ameer Allaw Key. You know, I'm a cryptographer developer working at the you know, technology freedom. I think a lot of privacy discourse and I focus is on um protecting ourselves from you know, overreach by authoritarianism by you know, governments, states, etc. But, I think there is like a a bigger uh expansive vision beyond that is the it's like a means for us to expand uh the space of freedom outwards. It's like a means for us to uh take back you know, economy, society, politics and to use that that technological power to create a new future.

Basically, I think I think privacy is a way for us to dream. So, there's been uh there's been throughout all of human history um a struggle between you know, um forces of you know, society and freedom and forces of of centralizing power, of despotism, of state civilization and this struggle has played out also in technology where um today Cypherpunk represents the liberatory side of technology, the desire to create technologies that empower uh humans, uh societies on a P2P level to allow people to you to do discourse, to you know, struggle for their their rights. Um so, the Cypherpunks today are uh really asking those kind of questions. So, my favorite privacy tool is is Linux because Linux is an operating system, but it's built by people all around the world together. There's nobody owns Linux, and Linux um you can use it for what for whatever purpose you want, and that's why it's been so so successful.

And so that represents like um ownership by society over technology, and that is like the most fundamental issue for privacy is to control the technology that we depend on, that we need that our lives basically run through. So I would um encourage people I would I think people should adopt a mindset of analyzing their behaviors and ways that things that they could do could be like used against them in the future, you know, ways that you know, for example, uh you know, and you are doing certain kinds of trade, you are buying or selling certain things, could if you had a running with you know, the law, because some you know, some bureaucrat somewhere, some satrap, doesn't like you, is there are there things that they can use against you? Because that's how they operate. When they want to go after you, they're going to they're going to find evidence to convict you. That's That's fundamentally how law enforcement operates.

So just be conscious of you know, what you're what you're giving them, what you're putting out there. You know, we grew up in an era of like Occupy and WikiLeaks and open source, and so for us it's like a very natural assumption to to be like oh optimism, you know, uh expansion expansive energy community. And you know, these like tools like if only we could like if if only like people could understand you know, what they can do if they it would like make logical sense. But I also think that the discourse is like shifted a lot. And today um you know, we live in an era of like looks maxing and Jordan Peterson and OnlyFans and you know, things have become like a lot more like selfish and you know, people growing up today haven't grown up in that era.

And so we need to do our job of making people see see what why do you need these tools? Like what is in it for you? You know? And there is there is big things in it for you, but for us it's so logical that we uh maybe skip the step of explaining it, you know? Um and I I think part of that also is um what for example, this event is doing where it's like trying to find intersections between uh other very close kind of movements.

Uh for example, art cybernetics trying to find those pollinations so that we so that we because what happened with crypto is crypto was like um because of this wider trend that I'm talking about about, it became about hyper financialization as everyone started to focus on the finance bro Um and so we've got trapped into that loop. But it's It's very circular and other people are like rejecting that. So, we need to find a way to break out of that. We're going into like the sun is setting and we're in a dawn period now and at the beginning of a long night. And in this long night, the moon will shine.

And whoever is a whoever's a follower of the moon will be able to chart a course to follow their destiny into uh the the rising of a new era. Fundamentally the logic of civilization is shifting. And s- what success looks like for us is being there at the forefront planting our flags and seeding our philosophies that will sprout in this new future that will come. To me, uh privacy is not a lifestyle. Privacy is um is it's a tactic of for crypto anarchy for agorist uh uh politics um it's also strong anonymity.

It's no compromise. It's unyielding and it's powerful.
