What does privacy mean to me?

Give me one second and I think about that.

I know the answer.

Privacy means freedom. Freedom because it gives you the choice to encrypt or non- encrypt your data and to be in control of how you show up online.

Freedom and human coordination. Privacy means that I am enabled to interact with technology that cannot be used against me. Privacy means sovereignty. It means choice. It means I get to consent to what I share with others.

Share the data that I want with whomever I watch.

The ability to be authentic, to be honest, and to selectively reveal myself to the world and connect with the world on my own terms.

Privacy to me, I think, is both a fundamental liberty and a critical system design component. It's a way of uh achieving outcomes as well as uh not achieving undesirable outcome.

On one end, it can be something for solidarity. On the other end, it can be used for things that are not so good for uh a collective to experience as a society.

Uh privacy is the freedom from the cop inside your own head and other people's. Privacy is a way for us to uh have control over the construction of our identity. Without privacy, maybe there is no identity.

Privacy is being able to be yourself no matter where you are.

You know, that's it. [Music]
