A Toolkit for Building Decentralized Ecosystems We introduce you to a toolkit designed to enable the creation and governance of digital, decentralized ecosystems. This session introduces a nine-step process to help develop an ecosystem from the ground up. It involves defining your vision, understanding key players, and mapping out your ecosystem's structure, including its economy. Yet, we also focus on engaging users and encouraging network effects. The video discusses the HiveMakers code, a toolkit developed in collaboration with Swarm, designed to help create decentralized, value-driven digital ecosystems. The toolkit comprises extensive research and a step-by-step guide available at toolkit.ethswarm.org. The focus of the talk is on governance within these ecosystems and how to manage common resources without succumbing to the tragedy of the commons, drawing parallels between the depletion of the Aral Sea and digital ecosystems. Lena highlights Eleanor Ostrom's eight principles for governing common resources, which can be applied both in the physical and digital worlds. The speakers discuss how these principles are interpreted and implemented by Swarm, emphasizing open boundaries, community rule creation, participatory decision-making, and other key aspects such as monitoring usage, sanctions for violators, conflict resolution, recognition by authorities, and embedding in larger systems. The talk concludes with an interactive Q&A session addressing concerns about overexploitation of resources within the Swarm ecosystem and how value alignment can influence projects built on top of it. The speakers encourage feedback on the toolkit from attendees.
